Vocaloid Terms
On this page you will find definitions and explanations of terms that are generally used within the Vocaloid program, fans, and other sources. If you wish for me to add any more please send a message under the contact tab.
Phonetics: A file code voice sample of a syllable that is used within theVocaloid and UTAU programs put together to piece together lyrics for an acapella creation. These samples will contain either a word sound such as a consonant or vowel sound most commonly. There are some phonetics that allow a Vocaloid or UTAU to make breath sounds. With UTAU since a user can create and record their own voice they can create whatever sound they desire and mark a phonetic for it to use.
Append: A term that Crypton Future Media has created meaning an updated voice bank(s). With this many fans have adopted this term and used it to define other updates for UTAU's or even Vocaloids that did not have their labelled package name state append. This is common with fans to say Meiko Append or Gakupo Append however appends only refer to the Vocaloids of the Character Vocal series being; Hatsune Miku, Kagamine Rin and Len and Megurine Luka.
Extend: A term that was only used once created by Internet Co., Ltd. for Megpoid's (Gumi) updated voice banks for the Vocaloid3 program. Since this term is very similar to "append" most fans use append instead of extend to lower confusion. This term was not used for Gackpoid (Kamui Gakupo), or Lily's updated whom were also created by Internet Co., Ltd.
V1, V2 & V3: These are short forms of describing a Vocaloid's place of release within a program's era. Since Vocaloid didn't have a number in it's name most fans refer to any Vocaloids of the first version of Vocaloid as V1 Vocaloids (i.e. MEIKO V1). The same thing refers to V2 and V3 referring to a Vocaloid being released in the Vocaloid2 and Vocaloid3 versions of the program respectively. This is usually seen with Vocaloids that have been updated into more recent versions of the Vocaloid program and has been used by official companies of Vocaloids such as Crypton Future Media releasing "KAITO V3" and even Internet Co., Ltd. releasing "V3 Lily".
Cover song: A song that is made by a singer that is originally sung by another person being that it is not the original work.
